KAYSVILLE KINKS - #84 IN SERIES - DEC 1897
  • A traveling band of Gypsies passed thru here Sunday accompanied by 5 bears, 2 monkeys and a baboon.
  • Tramps are beginning to congregate at the Oregon Short Line RR station and tithing yard. Marshal Blood gave 3 of them free lodging in the city jail.
  • Kaysville Elementary rendered closing exercises, commemorative of the happy Yuletide. The school rooms were tastefully decorated, and in the primary department a Christmas tree laden with good things gladdened the hearts of the little folks.
  • The 4 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel Smith died this morning of pneumonia.
  • Among the residents who have erected homes this year are: John R. Barnes cost $2,500; William Allen cost $1,200; John W. Gailey cost $1,600; John C. Owen cost $1,000.
  1. The leading firms in the city for 1897 are:
    1. The Kaysville Brick and Tile Co. and Ward and Drummer manufacture large quantities of bricks.
    2. The Kaysville Creamery handling 4,800,000 pounds of milk made into butter, cheese and cream.
    3. Kaysville Co-op
    4. H. J. Sheffield and Sons
    5. Kaysville Mercantile
    6. John Barton Furniture and Undertaking
    7. Swan and Co. Saloon
    8. R. Blamires Fresh Meat
    9. G. F. Patillo, tinsmith
    10. Mary Jane Proudfoot, Knitting Factory and Confectionery
    11. Miss May Flint, Millinery
    12. Hyrum Stewart General Mercantile
  • PHOTO: HYRUM STEWART, (1851-1920) Opened General Merchandise business in 1879. Postmaster from 1880-1890, served as Justice of the Peace, member of city council and 3 terms as Mayor of Kaysville. He also farmed and raised sheep. Sketch Salt Lake Herald Dec 1897.

     On August 1, 2018 Kristine decided to begin a series of excerpts from the newspaper called These excerpts were taken from articles about local happenings/gossip/announcements etc. It tells a story and gives a feel for Kaysville back in the day.
