KAYSVILLE KINKS - #71 NOVEMBER 1896
  • An attempt was made to wreck the northbound Cache Valley train Sunday evening between Farmington and Kaysville. The plans of the wreckers were foiled by the vigilance of a former employee and a wreck involving certain destruction of property and probably loss of human life averted. A man named Dunston saw what they were up to and yelled at them. One of them replied with a pistol shot. Dunston then rode his horse to the station at Farmington and alerted the station agent Mrs. Nichols. The dispatcher wired to the Kaysville station to have the train held there. It was later found two heavy 30 foot steel rails had been placed side by side on the track. The would be robbers, 3 drunken tramps were arrested in Kaysville.
  • George Underwoood and Miss Jennie H. Blood were married on Wednesday.
  • Fred Sheffield got a Box B letter the 1st of the week. (this meant a call to serve an LDS Mission)
  • The funeral of Mrs. Sarah Crockett was held at the meeting house last Sunday. She was 86 years of age and leaves 4 daughters and many grand and great grandchildren to mourn her demise.
  • Davis County has maintained her record as a Democratic strength. Hyrum Stewart won a very gratifying victory for representative in the State Legislature.
  • Ed Logan, Ed Ryan and James Ryan broke into the Kaysville Creamery recently and stole 200 pounds of butter. They were caught and are now in jail.
  • The Kaysville Post Office is soon to be removed from the Co-op store to Wessels and Company building, nearly a block east of Main Street.
  • PHOTO: 1st Photo - Wessels and Co. located at 69 E 100 N (currently Johnson's Carpet). It was built in 1890 originally owned by Doris Wessel and set up as a Dry Goods, Millinery, Notions, Ladies and Gent's Clothing store. The 2nd floor was headquarters of Woodmen of the World, John Barton also used this building to store caskets and his horse drawn hearses. Years later the 2nd floor was taken off. It was used as the Kaysville Fire station (before the station moved over to the blacksmith shop on Center Street circa 1950's) For several years it was also used as Dr. Gibb Smith's office. 2nd Photo - building as it looked circa 2006.
